History of diplomatic relations
The Swiss Confederation recognised the Republic of Estonia de jure on 22 April 1921, laying the foundation for official diplomatic relations between the two countries. In 1938, the first Swiss envoy was accredited to Estonia, residing in Helsinki. Switzerland did not recognise Estonia’s incorporation into the Soviet Union and re-recognised the Republic of Estonia on 28 August 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were restored on 4 September 1991.
Following the restoration of Estonia’s independence, Toivo Tasa (1995–1999) was appointed as the first Estonian Ambassador to Switzerland, residing in Vienna. The current Ambassador of Estonia to the Swiss Confederation is Arti Hilpus, who presented his credentials to the President of Switzerland on 13 January 2026 and resides in Vienna.
