The total value of goods exported to Slovakia in 2022 was 41.9 million euros, making Slovakia Estonia’s 42nd biggest export partner. This marked a 14.6% rise on exports to the country compared to 2021. Imports from Slovakia in 2022 were valued at 140 million euros, marking a 19.5% rise compared to 2021. This results in a trade deficit of 97.7 million euros. The main exports to Slovakia in 2022 were timber and timber products (28.8%), machinery and equipment (17.2%) and means of transport (7%). The main imports from the country in the same period were means of transport (cars; 49.6%), machinery and equipment (32.4%) and metals and metal products (6%). Based on the data of Creditinfo Eesti AS, 151 Estonian companies exported to Slovakia in 2022. The biggest and most widely known of these exporters are the Olympic Entertainment Group (entertainment), the Ingmar Group (chemical products), Markit Holding (computer and software sales) and Mistra-Autex (manufacturing of carpets). Both the sharing economy company Bolt and the international money transfer company Wise are represented on the Slovakian market. The Košice 2.0 start-up hub was opened in the Kasárne Kulturpark in Košice with the assistance of the Estonian firm CIVITTA, which offers management consultation and data analysis services. The Commercial Register lists 55 Estonian companies with Slovakian involvement.

As at 20 March 2023 there were 399 e-residents with Slovakian citizenship, 123 of whom have founded their own company in Estonia.

More than 40 members of the Estonian Defence Forces have attended Level 2 Staff Officer’s courses at the Armed Forced Academy of Slovakia, while members of the Slovakian Armed Forces study on courses at the Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL). Slovakia was one of the founding members of the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE).

Slovakian literature is primarily familiar to Estonian readers through the works of translation of Leo Metsar and Aleksander Raid from the 1970s. Metsar’s translations introduced Estonian readers to the Slovakian writer Vojtech Zamarovský, renowned for popularising ancient culture and history, in books such as At the Beginning There Was Sumer and Quest of the Mystery of the Empire of the Hittites. Author Klára Jarunková’s young adult and children’s novels The Diary of a Hero, Brother of the Silent Wolf, The Only One, The Rover, The Dog That Had a Boy and The Little Bird Who Knew a Secret have also been popular for decades.

Over the years, via their embassies, both countries have showcased the cultural and tourism opportunities the other offers. Art and photographic exhibitions have been held and concerts and performances arranged. Slovakia has also given Estonian artists the chance to take part in its creative education programme.
