The UN Security Council discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh issue on the initiative of Estonia

30. September 2020 - 11:48

Yesterday 29 September, a discussion was held at the UN Security Council on the initiative of Estonia, Belgium, Germany, France and the United Kingdom to address the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said the extensive military conflict that erupted on Sunday in Nagorno-Karabakh was extremely concerning. He extended his condolences to the families of victims and called on the parties to de-escalate the situation immediately. “Violence and brutal rhetoric will not lead to a solution, peaceful dialogue is the only option,” Reinsalu said.

In his statement, Estonia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Sven Jürgenson noted that the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) played an important role in international efforts regarding the frozen conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“We support the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs and urge the parties to come out with steps to de-escalate and resume negotiations for a solution,” Jürgenson said.

The UN Security Council also adopted press elements, calling on Armenia and Azerbaijan to immediately de-escalate tensions, and expressing its full support for the call by the Secretary-General on the sides to return to meaningful negotiations without delay.
