Statement by Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu on the illegal elections in South Ossetia on 9 June

9. June 2019 - 12:45

Estonia strongly condemns the so-called parliamentary elections in the occupied South Ossetia region of Georgia that take place today on 9 June.

We find these so-called elections illegal and do not recognise the outcome of these elections. Such illegal actions undermine efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict and therefore endanger security and stability in the region. We call on Russia to stop violation of international law in Georgia which continues to this day and fully implement the Six-point agreement of 12 August 2008.

We reaffirm Estonia’s full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. South Ossetia and Abkhazia are integral parts of Georgia.
