During his visits, Vseviov met with his French counterpart Anne-Marie Descôtes and Philippe Errera, Director General for Political and Security Affairs at the French Foreign Ministry, to discuss continued comprehensive support to Ukraine. “The precondition for sustainable peace in Europe is Russia’s defeat,” Vseviov said. “This is our best security guarantee because incomplete solutions would only provide Russia with an impetus to continue its aggression.”
Vseviov said it was crucial to maintain the hope of Ukrainians because it would give them the strength to keep fighting. “We must continue reconstruction efforts in Ukraine despite Russia’s brutal missile attacks on civilian infrastructure.”
“Russia’s war in Ukraine can only end in Ukraine’s victory,” Vseviov said. “Russia must answer for the destruction it has caused in Ukraine,” he added, emphasising that this includes reparations and accountability for crimes of war and aggression.
Vseviov said the West’s approach to Russia’s aggression needed to be reconsidered. “This war is won or lost on the strategic front, and not on the tactical one. Maintaining the unity of democracies is decisive. We must act resolutely and make the war so costly for Russia that it is forced to end it,” the secretary general said. “Together we can impose comprehensive sanctions and reinforce Ukraine’s defence capabilities.”
Meeting with State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office Andreas Michaelis in Berlin, Vseviov said aggression as a tool in European security policy must be completely discredited. “This war not only threatens the security of Ukraine, it also defines the security of all of Europe,” he said. “The precondition for security and peace in Europe is the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.”
