Yesterday, 4 November, political consultations between the foreign ministries of Estonia and Uzbekistan took place in Tallinn. The Estonian delegation was led by Undersecretary for Political Affairs Martin Roger, while the Uzbek delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Muzaffarbek Madrakhimov. The delegations were also welcomed by Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.

The consultations focused on strengthening bilateral relations, developing cooperation in international organisations, and issues related to regional and international security. According to Undersecretary Roger, there is considerable potential to strengthen cooperation between Estonia and Uzbekistan, particularly in the fields of the economy, trade and education.

“Uzbekistan is an important partner in Central Asia for both Estonia and the European Union,” Roger stressed. “This is also reflected in the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed between the European Union and Uzbekistan last year, which further strengthens our political and economic ties.”

The discussions also covered how Estonia could share its experience in digital development, cybersecurity and the modernisation of public services. Estonia confirmed its readiness to share its experience in developing digital government with its Uzbek counterparts and to support the improvement of digital services and the promotion of digital skills more broadly.

Addressing Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, Estonia stressed that Russia has not changed its aggressive course. International pressure must continue through both sanctions and political isolation until a just and lasting peace has been achieved and Russia has taken responsibility for all the crimes it has committed. Russia’s actions constitute a grave violation of international law and the principles of the UN Charter, and must have clear consequences. Estonia reaffirmed its continued and comprehensive support for Ukraine.

The discussions also covered the security situation in the Baltic Sea region and Central Asia, as well as the importance of regional cooperation in ensuring stability and security.

As part of the consultations, a meeting was also held with Undersecretary for Global Affairs Minna-Liina Lind, with discussions focusing on cooperation within the UN, the OSCE and other international formats.
