The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia has summoned Russia’s Ambassador to Estonia Aleksandr Petrov after Russia used military force against Ukrainian soldiers and vessels in the Kerch Strait.

Foreign Minister Sven Mikser has publicly condemned Russia’s attack in the Kerch Strait. “The attack was a deliberate escalation of tensions, a grave violation of international law and an act of aggression against Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Mikser said.

At the meeting with the Ambassador, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Russia to immediately return the vessels and release the crew members. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasised that under international law, Russia must ensure that vessels from Ukraine and other countries can pass through the Kerch Strait and sail in the Sea of Azov unhindered.

Estonia does not recognize the illegal annexation of Crimea and reaffirms its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
