Minister Reinsalu is in Riga today and takes part in the informal video conference of European Union foreign affairs ministers

Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu is in Riga today 15 May to sign a memorandum of understanding on the free movement between the Baltic States with the foreign ministers of Latvia and Lithuania. An informal video meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the European Union is held in the afternoon. 

Starting from today 15 May, the borders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania can be crossed by individuals who display no symptoms and who hold the citizenship of Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania, have a residence permit or right of residence or whose permanent place of residence is in one of the Baltic States according to the population registry. Anyone arriving to Estonia from Lithuania or Latvia no longer have to self-isolate for 14 days.

The memorandum of understanding to be signed by the three foreign ministers in Riga stipulates the general framework for a trilateral abolition of restrictions on movement introduced due to the COVID-19 crisis, and cooperation.

The ministers will sign the memorandum in Riga at 13.00. The signing is followed by a press conference. For information on the livestream, please contact [email protected].

At 15.00, the ministers will attend the informal meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the European Union at the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They will discuss developments in the Middle East, focusing on the peace process. Talks will also cover the impact of COVID-19 on the region of North Africa and the Middle East. Under topical issues, the EU High Representative Josep Borrell will give an overview of the Western Balkans video summit, the 12 May video meeting of defence ministers and the humanitarian aid airlift launched by the EU. The ministers will also follow up on Turkey’s drilling activities.
