Yesterday, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser was in Brussels for the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council where he emphasised the necessity to move forward towards the deliverables of the Eastern Partnership and make long-term plans.
“The strategic goals of the Eastern Partnership, which include welfare, stability and security across Europe, require commitment from all EU Member States. In addition to financial and practical support for reforms, continuous political support is also important,” Mikser said. “We must make joint efforts to achieve the deliverables for 2020* and at the same time think about the future beyond the 2020 deadline,” he added.
Foreign ministers also prepared for the Eastern Partnership ministerial meeting foreseen in October. “It is important for us that every meeting carries a message that takes our partnership a step forward,” Mikser said and added that it is also important to improve communication of the EU’s support for our partners, pointing out the importance of strategic communication.
The discussion on Libya focused on the political and economic situation in the country, including the upcoming parliamentary elections. Foreign Minister Mikser stressed the importance of an agreement in the country to accept the election results. Speaking about migration, foreign ministers reaffirmed the need to gain control over the southern border of Libya to tackle illegal migration.
During discussion on North Korea, the council looked at the ways to support efforts towards denuclearisation of the DPRK.
Foreign Minister Mikser also attended the EU - CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) ministerial meeting to discuss relations between the regions and cooperation in global forums. Mikser also met with the foreign ministers of Colombia, Uruguay and Suriname in the margins of the event.
*At the Eastern Partnership Summit that took place in the framework of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU in November 2017, 20 Deliverables for 2020 were adopted with the aim to strengthen the Eastern Partnership countries’ economy, connectivity, good governance and people-to-people contacts.
