The EUBAM mission was established with the joint memorandum of the European Commission and Moldova and Ukraine in 2005 and its aim is to advance cooperation between border guard and customs agencies and other law enforcement agencies. “As a fresh EU candidate country, Moldova has a clear goal and the role of these kinds of missions is more important than ever,” Aasmäe said.
In her new position, Aasmäe will cover the work and activities of experts, and develop media relations.
“I think it is remarkable that in Moldova, the process of joining the European Union is currently led by two women – President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita,” Aasmäe said. “It is a window of opportunity for Moldova that has admittedly opened during a very complicated period geopolitically, and as an Estonian, I am very happy to be here now.”
Mailin Aasmäe has worked in the field of communication in Estonia for nearly 15 years. She was responsible for communication at the Estonian pavilion at the Expo 2020 Dubai and was the spokesperson of the Office of the President of Estonia. She has also worked at the Tax and Customs Board, Ministry of Finance and the Supreme Court of Estonia.
Estonia is posting experts to international civilian missions to help prevent and manage international conflicts in our immediate neighbourhood and beyond. Currently, eight experts posted by Estonia are working with various international civilian missions: EU missions in Ukraine, Georgia, Somalia, Palestinian Territory and Iraq, and the UN mission UNMIK in Kosovo. Participation in civilian missions is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
