Gert Antsu named as new head of the Estonian Centre for Eastern Partnership

30. July 2019 - 10:05

Jaan Reinhold, who has headed the Estonian Centre for Eastern Partnership for the past three years, will take up the post of the Estonian Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates. He will be succeeded by Gert Antsu, who previously served as Estonia’s highest-ranking diplomat in Ukraine.

Both said they were glad that Eastern Partnership policy is an important priority of Estonian foreign policy and development cooperation, and it has raised our profile significantly among EU and Eastern Partnership countries and beyond.

The centre was founded in 2011 and is the only competence centre of its kind, aiming to support reforms, the civil society and media organisations locally, and advising on legal issues and anti-corruption measures in six Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, and Belarus.

“Estonia has taken on international commitments when it comes to providing development aid, and by applying our know-how and, increasingly, the funding of other international partners, we have targeted them at eastern countries in our immediate neighbourhood, where Estonia’s knowledge and experience is needed and appreciated. This way, we are creating security and new market opportunities for our enterprises, and will help bolster the nationhood of the Eastern Partnership countries,” Reinhold said.

“This year, the Eastern Partnership programme is celebrating its tenth year, and Estonia continues to support Eastern Partnership in the European Union. Open and progressive Eastern Partnership countries are also in our security interests and this extremely important foreign policy programme definitely has more potential,” Gert Antsu said.

The Estonian Centre for Eastern Partnership is the main organiser of the traditional annual Eastern Partnership conference in Tallinn, and also the largest implementer of development cooperation projects in Eastern Partnership countries. In addition to EU countries, they are also cooperating with the development cooperation organisations of the United States of America and Norway. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is one of the largest funders of the Estonian Centre for Eastern Partnership.
