On 18 and 19 August, a joint seminar was held for the secretaries general and directorates of the foreign and defence ministries of Estonia and Finland to discuss topical foreign policy issues and security challenges of the region. The meeting was held in Estonia and included a visit to the Tapa military campus.
“Estonia’s relations with Finland are close and diverse. Last week, I was on a tour of Finland and visited Tampere, Kuopio, Oulu, Vaasa, Rauma and Turku in addition to Helsinki, and it was clear that the cultural, economic and political ties between our countries cover all of Finland and extend beyond the capital Helsinki,” Secretary General Jonatan Vseviov said. “I am glad that in cooperation with our colleagues from the Ministry of Defence, we can host the Finnish delegation this week and discuss current affairs. Estonia and Finland are neighbours, we are facing similar security policy challenges.”
“Few countries have a model of defence readiness and reserve army as similar to Estonia as Finland. Close and mutually beneficial cooperation is a great boost to the defence of both countries,” the Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence Kusti Salm said.
This meeting format was used for the first time.
