Estonia is among the first countries to begin reconstruction in Ukraine in response to a request from the Ukrainian president for countries to select focus oblasts. “In anticipation of victory, it is important to help Ukraine rebuild the country now, focusing on restoring destroyed civilian sites and infrastructure. Our core principle in reconstruction is to meet Ukraine’s actual needs and long-term plans, and while we concentrate on the Zhytomyr Oblast, we plan our regional projects in such a way that the experience and know-how gained can be used in the entire country,” Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said.
Reinsalu said that the aim of the upcoming reconstruction conference was to bring partners from various countries together, both from the private and public sector, and civil society, and discuss rebuilding efforts in the oblast and decide on future action. “Rebuilding Ukraine takes a considerable amount of time and resources, and this process requires a common effort, and diverse international and domestic cooperation. We hope that Estonia can serve as an example to other countries with its initiative and first successful projects,” the foreign minister said.
The conference will have two panel discussions, with first concentrating on challenges in reconstruction efforts, and the second looking at practical actions and international cooperation in Zhytomyr. Both discussions will feature participants from Ukraine and Estonia and partners from other countries.
