Estonia’s delegation was headed by Rein Tammsaar, Undersecretary for Political Affairs, and India’s delegation was led by Reenat Sandhu, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs of India.
The consultations covered Estonia-India relations, main international issues and regional developments. “Relations between Estonia and India are good and warm. I would say our bilateral relations have reached a new level recently,” Undersecretary Tammsaar said.
“Obviously, both sides have contributed equally but I would like to highlight the consistent work of the Estonian embassy in New Delhi in particular. Thanks to the notable efforts of the former Estonian ambassador Viljar Lubi and especially our current ambassador Katrin Kivi in mediating political, economic and technology contacts and boosting cooperation, we have arrived at a point where India appointed Ajaneesh Kumari as its ambassador to Estonia in late 2020 and announced plans to open an embassy in Tallinn, and we are eagerly waiting for its formal opening,” Tammsaar said. Estonia opened its embassy in New Delhi in 2013 and the visit of Vice President of India Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu to Estonia in August 2019 marked a significant breakthrough in the relations of Estonia and India.
Undersecretary Tammsaar also said he hoped the consultations would have a positive effect on the dynamics of bilateral relations and several important bilateral economic and technology projects would get a boost. Tammsaar cited the investment by Reliance Industries into the Jio research centre in Estonia that works on e-government solutions as an example.
2 December marks 30 years since diplomatic relations were established between Estonia and India. The regular political consultations between foreign ministries are held alternately in Tallinn and New Delhi. Previous consultations were held on 7 February 2019 in New Delhi.
