“Estonia is expanding its diplomatic footprint. This year, we are opening a total of five new embassies, bringing the total number of Estonian embassies around the world to 50 by the end of the year. Every new embassy gives Estonia a better opportunity to represent its interests, support our people and businesses, and be present where decisions affecting our security and well-being are made,” Tsahkna said.
“Moldova is particularly important in this regard. Moldova is making strong progress towards European Union membership, and Estonia wants to provide the most effective support possible by sharing its experience and expertise in the digital and cyber fields. Having an embassy on the ground will enable us to do this more quickly and flexibly, and in close cooperation with Moldova and other EU member states,” Tsahkna added.
According to Tsahkna, it is in Estonia’s interest to provide comprehensive support for Moldova’s European path.
“From Estonia’s own experience, we know that joining the EU is transformative for a country, but EU enlargement also benefits existing member states, as it expands the EU’s single market and strengthens security and resilience. A strong and democratic Moldova in the EU will also benefit the Union itself,” Tsahkna said.
Moldova’s EU accession process means there is a growing need for practical cooperation. Estonia can use its experience to support Moldova particularly in the digital and cyber fields, strengthening the country’s resilience, the rule of law and democratic practices. Estonia will also continue its development cooperation projects in Moldova, supporting regional development and the capacity of local governments.
Estonia has supported Moldova’s progress towards EU membership and provided development cooperation for many years. Key areas of cooperation between Estonia and Moldova include digital and cyber cooperation, education, entrepreneurship, good governance, regional development and strengthening the country’s resilience.
