Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu spoke to his Georgian colleague Davit Zalkaliani on the phone, and both ministers reaffirmed that the relations between the two states are good and their friendship remains strong.

“Estonia and Georgia are very close partners and we enjoy great cooperation in nearly all areas. We continue to firmly support Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic integration, including by sharing our own experiences with carrying out reforms,” Foreign Minister Reinsalu said. However, the Foreign Minister stressed it was important to accelerate the reform process.

Foreign Minister Reinsalu assured his Georgian counterpart that the new Estonian government also considers it a priority to support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. “Abkhazia and South Ossetia are an inseparable part of Georgia and this must be respected. Estonia will never recognise the occupation of these territories,” he stressed.

The foreign ministers will have a chance to meet for the first time at the high-level Eastern Partnership conference held in Brussels on 14 May and dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership.

Foreign Minister Zalkaliani also congratulated the newly appointed Estonian Foreign Minister on taking office.
