Foreign Minister Reinsalu calls on his EU colleagues to give a strong response to Russian action in Ukraine

12. May 2019 - 12:00

Tomorrow Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu attends the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels where he plans to raise the issue of Ukraine with his EU counterparts.

“Ukraine continues to face provocations, hostile action and interference in its internal affairs by Russia,” the Foreign Minister said before the meeting. “Russia’s recent decision to expedite the application for Russian citizenship for Ukrainians living in the temporarily occupied territories in eastern Ukraine is another destabilising step that prevents the resolution of the conflict,” he stressed.

“I plan to raise this issue at tomorrow’s meeting with my EU colleagues. Russia’s behaviour has demonstrated that is has no interest in taking steps to implement the Minsk agreements and de-escalate the situation. The European Union must be prepared to give a strong response to this,” the Foreign Minister said.

The foreign ministers also plan to discuss the situation in Libya and exchange ideas on the Sahel region. Before the meeting, EU foreign ministers will also meet with their counterparts from Eastern Partnership countries to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership and discuss its future.
