Estonia’s honorary consul in Los Angeles Jaak Treiman took up his duties even before the restoration of Estonia’s independence and has worked as an honorary consul for 35 years – longer than any of his colleagues.
“I am extremely happy to thank and recognise our colleague Jaak Treiman for his long and passionate work as Estonia’s honorary consul in California in the United States,” Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets said, after she congratulated Treiman in a phone call today.
“Thanks to the steadfast and committed work of Honorary Consul Treiman, Estonia’s interests are well represented in the United States, and our ties in various fields have become considerably stronger. Treiman is also active in culture and business diplomacy and several cooperation projects have been launched thanks to his work. Naturally, we also remember that Treiman was actively standing up for Estonia’s independence at a time when Estonia was still occupied,” Liimets added.
Treiman is known for his warmth and empathy both in his homeland and on the other side of the Atlantic. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would like to thank and recognise the honorary consul for making Estonian citizens abroad feel safe and protected during this time in office.
Treiman became Estonia’s honorary consul on 26 March 1986 when Honorary Consul Ernst Jaakson, one of the greats of Estonian diplomacy, appointed him. Los Angeles resident Jaak Treiman is the only active honorary consul whose appointment predates the restoration of Estonia’s independence.
Estonia has 186 honorary consuls in 83 countries. There are 11 Estonian honorary consuls in the United States. Honorary consuls are prominent and respected locals, and one of their tasks is to provide consular services and consular assistance to Estonian citizens abroad. They also provide their expertise and skills to advance relations between their country and Estonia in business, culture, education, and other crucial areas.
