Foreign Minister Mikser in Ukraine: By not letting tragedies like the Holodomor be forgotten, we become stronger, smarter, more resilient

On Saturday, 24 November, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser attended an event marking the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor. In his speech at the international forum “Ukraine Remembers, the World Acknowledges”, Mikser extended his sympathy to the people of Ukraine, as well as all other victims of Stalin’s regime.

“Looking back at the history of totalitarianism, the Holodomor stands out as one of the 20th century’s greatest tragedies. The world must not forget it. Twenty-five years ago, Estonia was the first country to adopt a parliamentary declaration condemning the famine-genocide of 1932-1933 in Ukraine caused by the Stalinist policy of forced collectivisation and its aggressive dehumanisation. Estonians remember the brutality of 20th century Soviet totalitarianism and its assault on human dignity,” the Foreign Minister said.

“Today again, we need to underline the importance of investigations into abuses and violations of human rights, preservation of historical records, and restoration of the dignity of victims. Commemoration events such as today’s are necessary to remind us that we have to put tremendous effort into avoiding the recurrence of similar catastrophes in the future. By not letting such tragedies be forgotten, we become stronger, smarter, more resilient,” Mikser stressed.

Following the international forum, candles were lit in memory of the millions of victims of the Holodomor at the memorial outside the National Museum of Ukraine.
