Today 6 July, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets welcomed Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in Estonia. The ministers discussed bilateral relations, economic and digital cooperation, security in Europe and activities in international organisations.
At the meeting, the ministers affirmed the bilateral relation of Estonia and Switzerland were good and both parties wanted to expand economic, digital and cyber cooperation. “Switzerland is an important trade partner and our business culture and ethic are similar. I was glad to note that digital and cyber cooperation was a topic that interested both parties. We are prepared to share our knowledge and experience to advance joint activities between both our countries as well as private sectors,” Liimets said.
The ministers discussed the security situation in Europe and Liimets told her Swiss counterpart about Estonia’s experience holding the presidency of the UN Security Council. “Our success in shaping global security policy demonstrates that small states also have a chance to raise issues of regional and global importance. I wished my colleague good luck because next year, Switzerland is applying for UN Security Council membership for the first time,” Liimets said.
The foreign ministers also talked about attending the Ukraine Reform Conference tomorrow in Vilnius. “I am glad that in our development cooperation, we share the goal of supporting Eastern Partners and helping them implement necessary reforms. We would like to expand joint actions even further, as international attention and working together are crucial for meeting the challenges of Eastern Partners,” Liimets said.
