Today 9 February, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets met with the Foreign Minister of Luxembourg Jean Asselborn in Tallinn. The ministers discussed security in Europe and the build-up of Russian troops on Ukraine’s borders, and broader cooperation in the European Union and NATO. The ministers talked about digital and cyber objectives and topics like migration, European Union enlargement and the Conference on the Future of Europe.

Discussing the security of Europe, Minister Liimets underlined the need to use the shared and strong messages of Allies and efficient deterrence to ensure that Russia respects international law. “In the current security situation, we are mainly focused on achieving a de-escalation on Russia’s part. The troops around Ukraine, including in Belarus, affect the security of our entire region. This is why further reinforcing NATO’s deterrence posture is the only conceivable option for the Allies. At the same time, it is important to offer every assistance to Ukraine and provide them with political, economic and national defence support,” Foreign Minister Liimets said.

Touching on the topic of migration, Liimets highlighted the need to reinforce the external borders of the European Union and prevent the instrumentalisation of migration. “Estonia prioritises preventing irregular migration and dealing with its root causes, and also offering help to countries facing migratory pressure,” Foreign Minister Liimets said. “The importance of a strong external border of the European Union and a working Schengen area has been highlighted by crises, such as the hybrid attack by Belarus and the pandemic.”

Estonia and Luxembourg established diplomatic relations nearly a century ago, in February 1923. Cooperation today is characterised by Luxembourg hosting Estonia’s data embassy. Estonia and Luxembourg have a lot in common and enjoy excellent cooperation in NATO and the European Union. We are like-minded countries on many issues – for example, we consider it important to develop the internal market of the European Union and both Estonia and Luxembourg value the free movement of people and an efficient Schengen area.
