The country strategy 2021-2024 focuses on bolstering the development of democracy and good governance, supporting entrepreneurship in rural areas and advancing education.
Moldova has been a priority country for Estonia’s development cooperation since 2006. “Over these 15 years, Estonia has supported Moldova with more than €9 million and carried out more than 200 projects. With this country strategy, we will continue supporting Moldova’s European ambitions,” Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets said.
“Until 2024, we will mostly focus on strengthening democracy and good governance, and we will support small businesses through various programmes. We have extensive expertise and experience to share on the principles of founding startups, and we would also like to contribute to increasing the participation of women and young people in business,” Liimets added.
According to Moldova’s development priorities and Estonia’s expertise, the new focus of the country strategy is on boosting contemporary education and lifelong learning.
The main outlet of the bilateral development cooperation of Estonia and Moldova are capacity-building projects aimed at sharing know-how. The share of innovative solutions from the private sector in implementing the projects has increased to help meet objectives more quickly, in line with contemporary needs.
There are also plans to boost the participation of Estonia’s public sector in twinning project competitions, and the activities of technical assistance and information exchange programmes.
