September 2, Estonia’s new ambassador to NATO Harri Tiido presented his credentials to the NATO Secretary General Lord George Robertson.
Following the presentation of credentials, Lord Robertson and Ambassador Tiido discussed the planned changes in the structure of defence forces in the current member countries as well as in the new member countries.
According to Estonian Ambassador Harri Tiido, the Secretary General expressed the hope that Estonia, successfully holds on to its reforms’ timetable as was stressed in the Estonian Foreign Minister’s letter sent to NATO last spring. Lord Robertson said that he has always stressed, to current and new member states, the necessity to increase the capabilities of defence forces and the need to conform to the modern requirements.
Lord Robertson noted that the need for professionalism is a requirement of our time. "Well trained and well- equipped forces with good interoperability and with quick reaction time are indispensable for protecting one’s territory as well as taking part in NATO operations", said the Secretary General.
The participation of the new members in NATO committees and the organizing of work inside NATO was also discussed.
Harri Tiido was born on October 8, 1953 in Jõhvi. He graduated from the 2nd Tallinn Secondary School and from Tartu University, specializing in English philology. Beginning in 1980, Mr Tiido was employed as a journalist at the Estonian National Public Radio and Radio Kuku in Tallinn. From 1996-1997, he worked for the Voice of America and from 1997-2000 he worked as the chief editor of Radio Kuku.
In 2000, he was appointed as Deputy Under-Secretary of security policy at the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
