Estonian Ambassador to Belarus Merike Kokajev presented her credentials to President Alexander Lukashenko.
Ambassador Kokajev and President Lukashenko acknowledged after the ceremony that relations between Estonia and Belarus are good and that the economic relations in particular could be developed further. “Estonian companies have showed interest in cooperating and finding partners in Belarus. This is encouraged by a visit of the delegation of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry to Minsk at the beginning of February,” Ambassador Kokajev said.
The Ambassador and the President agreed that both countries have potential for cooperation in tourism and culture. This was proved by great interest in the Days of Estonian Culture organised in Minsk in November.
Merike Kokajev studied French language and literature at St. Petersburg State University. Kokajev has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1991. From 2005-2007, Merike Kokajev was a member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and from 2008-2010 an Ambassador to India residing in Tallinn. From 2010, Kokajev was an Ambassador to Italy, San Marino and Malta, residing in Rome. Before the current position, Merike Kokajev worked as a Director of the Division of the EU General Affairs and South-Eastern Europe. Ambassador Kokajev speaks English, Russian and French.
