The meeting following the presentation of credentials focused on strengthening bilateral relations and Moldova’s progress towards accession to the European Union, which Estonia strongly supports. European security and Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its impact on Moldova were also discussed. The Ambassador invited Moldova to participate in the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Tallinn in January 2027.
“Moldova is making strong progress towards European Union membership, and Estonia wants to provide the most effective assistance and support possible, drawing on our own experience and Estonia’s strengths in the digital and cyber fields. At the same time, it is important to emphasise that European Union enlargement is not a charity project: it also strengthens our own security and prosperity and expands the European community of values,” Ambassador Königsberg said.
Siiri Königsberg has extensive diplomatic experience in European, security and regional policy. She has served as Estonia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO and held several positions at Estonia’s Permanent Representation to the European Union. During Estonia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, she chaired the working party dealing with the EU’s relations with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. She has also served at the Estonian embassies in Stockholm and Oslo. From 2023 to 2026, she was Director General of the Europe Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Estonia and Moldova established diplomatic relations on 10 November 1992. Estonia will officially open its embassy in Chișinău this October.
