During the meeting following the presentation of credentials, the Ambassador and the President discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations between Estonia and Azerbaijan, with a particular focus on economic cooperation, digital development, education, green energy and other areas of mutual interest. They also underlined the importance of high-level bilateral contacts, including Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna’s visit to Baku in October 2025.
The parties stressed the importance of continued comprehensive support for Ukraine. Ambassador Nirk also briefed the President on Estonia’s preparations for hosting the Ukraine Recovery Conference in January 2027.
“The most important task of diplomacy is to build bridges,” said Nirk. “I take up this position with the aim of creating new opportunities for cooperation between Estonia and Azerbaijan and strengthening our partnership in areas where our interests converge.”
Ambassador Tiina Nirk has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1990. During her career, she has served in the Ministry’s Press and Information Department, Protocol Department and Consular Department. Nirk has been Estonia’s Consul in London, Director General of the Protocol Department and, from 2019 to 2026, Director General of the Consular Department. Since August 2026, she has served as Ambassador of Estonia to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Estonia and Azerbaijan established diplomatic relations on 2 April 1992. On 1 March this year, Estonia opened its embassy in Baku. The embassy’s official inauguration ceremony will take place on 20 October 2026.
