On Wednesday 3 October, Estonia’s new Ambassador to Tajikistan Toomas Tirs presented his credentials to the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe.

Presenting his credentials, Ambassador Tirs affirmed the good relations between Estonia and Tajikistan and between the European Union and Tajikistan, and highlighted potential areas of cooperation. “Estonia sees good prospects for cooperation with Tajikistan first and foremost in the digital field and the field of education,” Tirs said. “There is great interest in the digitalisation of public services and it is one of the priority areas of European Union development cooperation in the region. At the same time, there are officials and active young entrepreneurs in Tajikistan who want to learn from Estonia’s experience. On the international stage, Tajikistan has been outspoken in the fight against terrorism, and interest in the country has risen significantly due to the recent events in Afghanistan. Moreover, Tajikistan is very important to the Central Asian region in terms of water management, since 60% of the region’s water comes from here.”

Ambassador Toomas Tirs graduated from the University of Tartu and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a degree in business management. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007 and has worked in the Political Department and the External Economic and Development Cooperation Department, as well as in the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU. In 2015, Ambassador Tirs worked as a national expert at the Secretariat of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and at the Government Office as Head of Logistics of the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU between 2016 and 2018. From 2018 to 2021, Toomas Tirs was the Estonian Ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg and Deputy Head for Administrative Affairs at the Permanent Representation of Estonia to the EU.
