Today 16 September, Estonian Ambassador to Egypt Miko Haljas presented his credentials to the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the presidential palace in Cairo.
At the presentation ceremony, President Al Sisi wished the new Ambassador success in developing bilateral relations and affirmed Egypt’s interest in closer political and economic cooperation.
Ambassador Haljas thanked Egypt for its support for Estonia’s ambitions for becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council and reaffirmed Estonia’s interest in continuing dialogue with Egypt on issues that are within the domain of the UN Security Council as well as in developing broader political and economic cooperation.
“Egypt is a country in the Middle East and Northern Africa that has political influence and steadily growing economic potential and purchasing power, and it is undergoing a programme of economic modernisation in cooperation with the IMF, the OECD and the EBRD. A closer cooperation with Egypt is important for Estonia both for a better understanding of the complicated issues of the region as well as for opening new opportunities for Estonian entrepreneurs,” Ambassador Haljas said.
Ambassador Miko Haljas was born on 20 January 1967 in Tallinn. He graduated from the Tallinn University of Technology and the Estonian School of Diplomacy and joined the Estonian foreign service in 1995. He has previously worked as the Ambassador to Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia as well as Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Lebanon, and in various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence. Before his appointment to Cairo, he was the Director of the Division for Security Policy and Transatlantic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has also studied at the Clingendael Institute for International Relations and the NATO Defense College in Rome.
