Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu met with the Group of Friends of Georgia at the OSCE meeting in Bratislava and joined the statement that supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia.
Alongside Estonia, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States of America joined the statement, reaffirming their full support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and expressing their deep concern over the situation in Georgia and its occupied territories.
The states expressed concern over the 11-year occupation and underlined the need for a peaceful resolution of the conflict based on full respect for the UN Charter, the Helsinki Final Act and international law.
They reiterated their concerns over the increased Russian military exercises in and the militarisation of Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions. In their statement, Friends of Georgia stressed that the would follow closely the case of the death of Georgian citizen Irakli Kvaratskhelia in arbitrary detention at the Russian Military base illegally deployed in the Abkhazia region. They also condemned the killings of several other Georgian nationals.
Friends of Georgia also expressed support for the Geneva International Discussions and the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM). The group underlined that any attempt to impede the work of the EUMM would be considered an attempt to destabilise peace on the ground.
