On 9 December 2010, Estonia became a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), although its cooperation with the organisation had begun in the 1990s. Today, Estonia’s membership is celebrated with a book exhibition at the National Library.
Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said that Estonia’s membership in international organisations was key to ensuring national prosperity and security. “OECD is a platform of evidence-based policy where countries can share their common challenges and try to find solutions together. From Estonia’s perspective, it is very important to be a member of this analytical centre where new ideas are generated, fresh solutions are proposed and the development of humanity and the world is guided. This is what OECD membership has offered to Estonia in the best way over these 10 years,” Reinsalu said.
A book exhibition on the OECD and Estonia’s road to membership remains open at the National Library until the end of December. Director General of the National Library Janne Andresoo said that as the official repository library of the OECD, the National Library of Estonia has been ensuring the availability of the organisation’s publications to experts and other readers in Estonia for 11 years. “Considering the amount of useful analytical comparative information generated by the OECD annually, performing this role is very important to the National Library,” Andresoo said.
The OECD brings together highly developed countries with an open market economy that respect democracy and human rights. The headquarters of the organisation are located in Paris. OECD member countries are cooperating closely and the organisation publishes comparative analyses and studies that assist countries in policy-making. In October, Estonia nominated President Kersti Kaljulaid as a candidate for the next Secretary-General of the OECD.
