Estonia and Democratic Republic of the Congo establish diplomatic relations

On 3 July in New York, Estonian Ambassador to the UN Sven Jürgenson and Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Ignace Gata Mavita established diplomatic relations between Estonia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The ambassadors also discussed the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“It is important to ensure peaceful, fair and transparent elections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to achieve election results respected by all parties,” Jürgenson noted and emphasised the importance of progress in political processes. The ambassadors also discussed the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) and different ways the international community can contribute to the solution of the on-going conflict in the country.
Jürgenson also introduced Estonia's candidacy for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for 2020-2021.
