In early January, the first shipment with equipment from Elektrilevi arrived, containing transformers and other necessary equipment for restoring damaged energy infrastructure. The transport for both shipments was organised and financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Russia’s attacks have damaged at least half of Ukraine’s energy systems. Deliberate strikes on civilian infrastructure is a grave violation of international humanitarian law, which affects housing arrangements and puts civilians in a very vulnerable situation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working with Estonian energy companies to ensure crucial assistance to Ukraine and these shipments will definitely not be the last. Now, as we are nearing the one-year anniversary of Russia’s full-scale war, it is crucial to do everything we can to help the people of Ukraine fight Russia’s aggression until the war is won,” Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said.
“I would like to thank all energy companies that have been prepared to donate energy equipment to Ukraine,” he added.
“Elektrilevi is ready to offer every assistance to Ukraine by giving various devices that we have stocked up on in the course of network updates. Ukraine’s energy infrastructure is much larger than Estonia’s and therefore, any assistance that others and we can give is all the more important. We all know the importance of electrical connections. We would like to commend the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their initiative on sending the shipment and this will not be our last,” Mihkel Härm, Chairman of the Management Board of Elektrilevi, said.
In the last months of last year, Estonia concentrated on providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine in addition to military and political support in order to help Ukraine cope with attacks on its energy infrastructure. In cooperation with companies and other ministries, generators for public spaces, electrical components, battery banks and voltage stabilizers have arrived in Ukraine.
