In view of the continued detention of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny by the Russian authorities, the foreign ministers of the three Baltic States made a joint statement to Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, thanking him for his swift response and coordination efforts to prepare a joint statement of the European Union.
In their letter, the foreign ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania called for additional diplomatic measures to increase pressure on the authorities of Russia for the release of Navalny. The ministers proposed raising the issue at the Foreign Affairs Council next week, where they could also discuss the possibility of additional sanctions.
The ministers suggest Borrell consider postponing his visit to Moscow scheduled for early February if the Russian authorities continue to detain Navalny and violate his rights.
