History of diplomatic relations
Malta recognised Estonia on 26 August 1991, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 1 January 1992.
The first Maltese Ambassador to Estonia was William Spiter, who resided in Bonn, and presented his credentials in 1996. From 1997 to 2000, Malta was represented by John Busuttil, charge d’affaires ad interim. In 2000, Eric Gerada-Azzopardi, who resided in the newly opened embassy in Stockholm, presented his credentials. His mandate ended in autumn 2002. From 2002–2007, the ambassador was Mark Miceli-Farrugia, and from 2008–2013, Laurence Grech, based in Valletta. The current Maltese Ambassador to Estonia, Kenneth Vella, who also resides in Valletta, presented his credentials on 6 July 2021.
The Honorary Consul of Malta in Estonia is Mr Aku Johannes Sorainen, attorney-at-law (exequatur 26 November 2003).
Jaak Jõerüüt was the Estonian Ambassador to Malta from 1999 to 2002, and Jüri Seilenthal from 2003 to 2006. Andres Tomasberg represented Estonia in Malta from 2006–2010, Merike Kokajev from 2010–2014, and Celia Kuningas-Saagpakk from 2014–2021. From 25 February 2021, the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia is Paul Teesalu, who, like previous ambassadors, resides in Rome.
