Estonia’s strategy for Africa

Estonia’s bilateral relations with African countries have intensified especially since 2017, when Estonia chaired the Council of the European Union and launched an active campaign to become a member of the UN Security Council. To meet the challenges of the twenty-first century and increase prosperity, we need a relationship with African countries based on partnership and mutual interests.

The aim of compiling Estonia’s Strategy for Africa for 2020–2030 is to get a more detailed overview of Estonia’s current cooperation with various African countries and to set specific development directions and a further action plan for 2021–2025. This strategy is based on the objectives of the Estonian Foreign Policy Development Plan 2030 and the Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Programme for 2021–2024. The strategy contributes to the achievements of global goals of sustainable development and is in line with the principles of the EU–Africa Strategy. The Special Representative for African Economic Relations, the Special Representative for Climate, and the Special Representative for Human Rights and Migration, who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2020, play a key role in implementing the strategy.
