History of diplomatic relations
Denmark recognised Estonia as a sovereign state de jure on 5 February 1921. After Iceland, the Kingdom of Denmark was the second country to restore diplomatic relations with the re-independent Republic of Estonia, on 24 August 1991.
The first ambassador, Otto Borch, was posted to Estonia from Copenhagen on 26 August 1991, just a few days after diplomatic relations were restored. Estonia’s first ambassador residing in Copenhagen was Arvo Alas.

Bilateral economic relations with Denmark are growing. Denmark is among Estonia’s 12 main trading partners. More detailed data on trade with Denmark is available in the application of Statistics Estonia. Denmark is also an important foreign investor in Estonia, accounting for 2.3% of total foreign direct investment in Estonia.
Estonia and Denmark are linked by historical ties. According to legend, the Dannebrog, the Danish flag, originated in Estonia. On 15 June 2019, the 800th anniversary of the legend of the birth of the Dannebrog was marked, including with a visit to Tallinn by Queen Margrethe II.
Cultural cooperation covers many fields, particularly music, theatre, cinema and literature.
Bilateral defence cooperation between Estonia and Denmark is based on strong working-level contacts and long-standing traditions. In the 1990s, Denmark was one of the main supporters and mentors in the development of Estonia’s defence institutions.
Denmark has contributed to strengthening Estonia’s security through the presence of its troops in Estonia as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence, and through its participation in the Baltic Air Policing mission.
