History of diplomatic relations
Estonia recognised Bosnia and Herzegovina on 1 June 1992, and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 8 February 1993.
Bosnia and Herzegovina covers Estonia from its embassy in Stockholm. Estonia’s Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Raul Toomas, resides in Budapest.
Bilateral relations
- September 2019 – Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić and Prime Minister Jüri Ratas met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York
- October 2017 – Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Dragan Čović visited Estonia
- March 2017 – Special Representative to the European Union institutions Matti Maasikas visited Bosnia and Herzegovina
- April 2016 – Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Igor Crnadak visited Estonia
- April 2010 – Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj attended the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Tallinn
- August 2009 – Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Sven Alkalaj paid a working visit to Estonia
- June 2007 – Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip paid a working visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina
- The Protocol on the implementation of the Agreement on the readmission of persons residing without authorisation was signed on 2 June 2010 and entered into force on 6 December 2010.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is Estonia’s 101st-largest export partner. In 2025, Estonia exported goods worth €1.77 million to Bosnia and Herzegovina and imported goods worth €954,000 from Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulting in a trade surplus of €812,000.

Staff from the War Childhood Museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina have participated in conferences organised by the Estonian National Museum. In recent years, cooperation between libraries has also intensified through contacts with the Director of the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Estonian defence personnel have participated in peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 1996, initially under NATO command as part of the IFOR and SFOR missions. From 2005 to 2011, Estonia contributed to the European Union military operation EUFOR ALTHEA. The European Union Police Mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, EUPM, began on 1 January 2003, and Estonia participated in it until the end of 2011.
