Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet announced the names of the winners of the architectural contest to design the new embassy in Riga at the Museum of Estonian Architecture on Friday, 1 February.

The jury unanimously chose the design entitled “Teele”, created by Lembit-Kaur Stöör, Ülo-Tarmo Stöör and Heidi Urb as the winner of the design contest for the new embassy building in Riga. The design was awarded a prize of 300,000 kroons.

According to Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, the winning design fits well into Riga’s cityscape. “The winner gracefully accomplishes the integration of modern architecture into a historical residential quarter of the city,” said Paet.

Second place and a prize of 225,000 kroons went to Emil Urbel, Andrus Mark, Ott Hirvesoo and Peeter Veimer and their design entitled “Horta”. Third place and 150,000 kroons went to Latvians Juris Mitenbergs, Peteris Suprins, Zane Krumina, Uldis Tucs, Edgars Gribusts and Edijs Kravalis, who submitted the design “White Cube.ee”.

Two other ideas were purchased as well—the designs “Ant”, authored by Raivo Kotov, Margit Kärner and Indrek Mikk, and “AIIR”, designed by Siiri Vallner and Indrek Peil. The cost of each design was 75,000 kroons.

An exhibit of the designs submitted to the contest will be on display in the basement of the Museum of Estonian Architecture until 2 March. The winning designs will remain in the museum’s collection after the exhibit ends.
