Today, Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu attended the informal video meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the European Union, where he called on the EU to impose additional sanctions on Belarusian officials and add Belarusian companies that support the Lukashenko regime to the EU sanctions list.
“The tense situation in Belarus has lasted for more than a hundred days now and the pressure of authorities on peaceful protesters is becoming increasingly cruel,” Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said.
“The death of 31-year old Raman Bandarenko, who lost his life last week due to the brutal actions of Belarusian security forces, demands a response. Those responsible for this tragedy must be held to account and we call on EU states to impose additional sanctions on Belarusian officials,” he emphasised. “Belarusian companies that support the regime must be added to the EU sanctions lists,” he said.
The Foreign Minister noted that Estonia, together with Belgium, Germany, France and the United Kingdom raised the results of the elections in Belarus at the UN Security Council last week.
Today, the foreign affairs ministers also discussed multilateralism and met with the Palestinian foreign minister via video. The agenda also included events in Turkey, Nagorno-Karabakh and Ethiopia, and the elections in the United States.
