At the meeting of Asian and European foreign ministers at the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Myanmar, Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser said Europe had deep concern for the developments in Rakhine State.
“We call for an end to violence in the whole country,” said Mikser on behalf of the EU at a press conference that closed out the meeting, adding that Europe was worried about the lacking access to humanitarian aid in the region. “Myanmar’s authorities must restore full access to all aid agencies and allow a UN mandated fact-finding mission to the country,” said Mikser and added that it is important to guarantee safe and dignified return for those who have fled their homes for Bangladesh.
Mikser also raised the issue of the situation on the Korean peninsula. “We strongly condemn the North Korean nuclear programmes,” said Mikser. “The solution cannot be military, but diplomatic.”
A total of 53 partners from Europe and Asia took part in the 13th ASEM Foreign Ministers meeting that ended today in Myanmar’s capital Naypyitaw. The ministers discussed relations between Europe and Asia, the situation in North Korea, terrorism and security.
