Today, Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu participated in the unofficial video conference of the foreign ministers of the European Union, where views were exchanged with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. High Representative of the European Union Josep Borrell made an introduction to the video call.
“The US are our closest partner and ally,” said Minister Reinsalu. “Our transatlantic partnership is strategically important for the maintenance of stability and a Western way of life. The corona crisis has only strengthened this understanding.”
Reinsalu said that the Baltic region and the rest of Eastern Europe have witnessed the increasing aggression of Russia. “The situation in Ukraine is not solely of local importance, but defines whether international law and respect for the independence of states are permanent,” said Reinsalu.
“We need a stronger US presence in Europe,” said Reinsalu and emphasised the importance of the Three Seas Initiative in transatlantic cooperation. The Minister hopes to see a high-level representation at the next Three Seas Conference that will be held in Tallinn in October.
Reinsalu suggested that a dialogue between the US secretary of state and the European foreign ministers could be held at least twice a year.
