Mikser to the Armenian Foreign Minister: we hope Armenia continues with reforms

11. February 2019 - 10:04

On Friday 8 February, Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser met in Tallinn with his Armenian counterpart Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, who is on an official visit to Estonia.

Mikser welcomed the fact that cooperation between the two countries and the relations between the European Union and Armenia are becoming closer. “The new government of Armenia has expressed a wish to cooperate more closely with the EU and there is still a lot of potential for the relations between our two countries,” Foreign Minister Mikser said. Both foreign ministers agreed that the opportunities present by the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) should be used to the full.

Speaking about reforms, Mikser stressed the need to stay on course. “We commend Armenia for carrying out reforms aimed at strengthening democracy, including their fight against corruption, and we hope for a smooth continuation of this process,” Mikser said. He reaffirmed Estonia’s readiness to share its experiences with enacting reforms.

“This year we are also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership which has always been and remains a priority for Estonia,” Mikser said. “On our part, we would like to increase the political dimension of the Eastern Partnership and achieve more tangible results, for example in the context of the four freedoms of the EU, which would motivate our partners, including Armenia, to continue with reforms,” he said.

Mikser highlighted Armenia’s notable progress in introducing e-governance. “Innovation and e-governance are the keywords when it comes to advancing cooperation between our governments as well as our IT companies,” the Estonian Foreign Minister said.

The two sides also expressed the wish to increase trade, the scale of which has traditionally been small, but has recently shown signs of increasing.
