The visit of the Member of Estonian Parliament and Member of the President’s Advisory Council Mr. Hannes Hanso to South-America continued in Lima, the capital of Peru, where the Estonian delegation, consisting additionally of Ambassador Margus Kolga and diplomat Mari Tomingas, paid a visit on 20 21 May.
The delegation met with the Director General of Global and Multilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Marco Balarezo and consulted with the Head of the European Union Delegation in Lima, Ambassador Diego Mellado.
In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hanso introduced Estonia’s key positions in the United Nations Security Council campaign and explained its views on UN issues in general.
Peru, currently a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, looks favourably upon small states’ willingness to speak up on global security issues and apply for the non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council. This enhances international law and raises the legitimacy of the Council.
Estonia and Peru are both members of the UN pressure group ACT and therefore stand together for greater transparency of and wider inclusion in the Council.
Ambassador Balarezo was also interested in Estonia’s digital solutions.
Peru, like other countries of the region, is paying more attention to the comprehensive e-government solutions and has taken note of Estonia as one of the leaders in this area.
The Ambassador suggested that cooperation between the two countries in the area of digital solutions could be closer and more effective.
