Maasikas: North Macedonia’s integration with the EU and NATO reinforces regional stability

26. February 2019 - 15:30

On 25 and 26 February, the Estonian Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary for European Affairs Matti Maasikas was on a visit to Skopje in North Macedonia, where he met with Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov, Vice Prime Minister of North Macedonia on European Union Affairs Bujar Osman, and held European Union consultations.

At the meeting with Foreign Minister Dimitrov and Vice Prime Minister Bujar, the Undersecretary expressed support for North Macedonia’s ambitions to begin accession talks with the European Union as early as this June. “North Macedonia has made considerable progress with reforms and today we were assured that the government will continue on the same course. I believe that the EU member states will appreciate this,” Maasikas said. He reaffirmed Estonia’s readiness to support North Macedonia in carrying out reforms.

On behalf of NATO members, Maasikas also welcomed the signing of the accession protocols by North Macedonia, which clears the way for the country to become the 30th member of the North Atlantic alliance. “The enlargement of NATO helps to increase security in the Balkans as well as all of Europe. We are happy to welcome North Macedonia as the future member of the alliance – it helps to bolster regional stability and shape a common space of values,” Maasikas said.

Maasikas also recognised North Macedonia and Greece for resolving their name dispute after 27 years. “It is a remarkable achievement and we hope that the advances that have taken place in the relations of the two countries will set an example for other countries in the region and beyond when it comes to settling complicated issues,” the Undersecretary said.

North Macedonia’s accession into NATO and the EU will also increase its bilateral cooperation with Estonia. Macedonians wish to get an insight into building an e-state, learn from Estonia´s experiences in our integration with NATO and the EU, and the interest of entrepreneurs of North Macedonia has also increased.

Undersecretary Maasikas also attended an event held in honour of the former President of North Macedonia Boris Trajkovski.
