High-level meetings of MP and Member of President’s Advisory Council Mr. Mart Nutt in El Salvador
Deputy Foreign Minister of El Salvador Liduvina Magarín and Member of Estonian Parliament Mart Nutt
Estonian delegation headed by Member of Parliament Mr. Mart Nutt finished its visit to the Caribbean and Central American countries in El Salvador on 20-21 June.
During the visit to El Salvador the delegation met with the President of the Salvadorian Parliament Dr. Norman Quijano, Deputy Foreign Minister Liduvina Magarín and Director of Communications and Digitalisation of the Presidential Administration Roberto Lorenzana.
At the time of the visit, El Salvador introduced to the wider public its first national Digital Strategy. The country has decided to use several digital solutions developed in Estonia, particularly the x-road platform, as a basis for its own national solutions.
At the meetings in El Salvador Mr. Mart Nutt introduced to his interlocutors Estonia’s activities in the United Nations and the country’s candidacy for the non-permanent seat of the United Nations Security Council. Additionally, it was discussed with the Salvadorian colleagues how to enliven bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of e-government and e-services.
With the President of the Parliament the political systems and parliamentary practices of both countries were introduced and the differences of presidential and parliamentary democracies were analysed, their merits and weaknesses weighed.
At the meeting in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the focus was on the priorities in the United Nations, the role of small states in the global system and their opportunities to bring about positive changes.
The representatives of El Salvador expressed gratitude to Estonia for its support to the development of their Digital Strategy and voiced hope that the hitherto friendly and successful cooperation will continue in the future.
On 19 November, the campaign team led by Ambassador Margus Kolga and accompanied by Ms. Mari Tomingas from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs arrived in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta to continue with the introduction of Estonia’s UN Security Council candidature to the countries of South-East Asia.
Estonian UN Security Council campaign delegation visited the Republic of Kiribati on 15-18 November. Kiribati is a United Nations member state in Micronesia; being a member of the UN since 1999, it is the only member state, which to date has not joined any UN regional group. The land territory of Kiribati consists of 33 atolls on both sides of the equator.
