High-Level Meetings of Member of the Estonian Parliament Mart Nutt in Dominica

12. April 2018 - 9:05
Member of the Estonian Parliament Mr. Mart Nutt meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs of Dominica Ms. Francine Baron

On 10-11 April Estonian delegation had meetings in Dominica, an island state which suffered catastrophic damage by hurricane Maria in autumn 2017. Hurricane damages are still visible in the capital Roseau and the entire country, total losses are estimated at more than 200% of its 2016 GDP and the reconstruction and rebuilding of the country is a long-term effort. Estonia donated 30,000 to the fund established to support the reconstruction effort. In Dominica, the Estonian delegation met Minister for Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs Ms. Francine Baron and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and CARICOM Affairs Mrs. Sylvanie Burton.

The discussions focused on climate change and its connection to security, because the damages inflicted on Dominica by hurricane Maria will take many years to recover from. In certain conditions, the results of climate change may pose a threat to a country’s survival. Consequently, raising this issue in global fora is particularly important for small states and requires the solidarity of all countries in the world. The extent of damages wrought by hurricane Maria has made the resilience of governance the key issue for Dominican government, but more widely for all states of the Caribbean region.

Estonian e-Governance Academy is engaged in a regional project focused on enhancing cooperation between the Caribbean states and the resilience of their governance, including through joint digital solutions.

The visit of Mart Nutt to the Caribbean region will end later this week with meetings in Saint Kitts and Nevis.
