Member of Estonian Parliament and President’s Advisory Council Mr. Hannes Hanso started on 18 May his visit to Latin-American countries. The tour will take the delegation to Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Panama, and is aimed at introducing to the interlocutors the key messages of Estonia’s candidature to the United Nations Security Council and identifying the perspectives for enhancing bilateral cooperation.
In the capital, Santiago de Chile, Mr. Hanso met with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile Ambassador Patricio Torres and Coordinator for Parliamentary Affairs Ambassador Carlos Appelgren.
Additionally there were meetings with Estonian Honorary Consul in Chile Mr. Felipe Ernst as well as the Head of the European Union Delegation Ambassador Stella Zervoudaki. The discussions revealed that Chile is today greatly focused on the digitalisation of the country and the establishment of e-governance. The President of Chile, Sebastian Piñera has declared this as one of the priorities of his government. This has increased Chile’s interest in the practices and experience of other countries as well as its readiness to engage in cooperation in the area of digital services.
At the meeting in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Secretary General Torres expressed interest in intensification of relations with Estonia in the areas of e-governance, digital services and cyber security. Consultations could be also held concerning legislation and regulations in the area of e-government.
”Taking into consideration the interest and readiness of Chile to enhance the digitalisation of the country, there are good prospects for companies of Estonian IT cluster to use it as a hub for entry into the South-American markets. This opportunity should not be missed and consideration ought to be given to signing a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate that, which was suggested by Chile”, said Mr. Hanso.
The key messages of Estonia’s UN Security Council campaign were well received by the Chilean interlocutors and Chile wished Estonia the best of luck at the elections in 2019. Chile has been in the UN Security Council several times, last time in 2014-2015.
The visit will continue in Peru. Mr. Hannes Hanso is accompanied by Ambassador Margus Kolga and diplomat Mari Tomingas from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
