Foreign Ministry's travel reminder: Passenger traffic on Tallinn-Helsinki ferries will end tomorrow, Helsinki-Tallinn will continue

10. April 2020 - 12:25

From tomorrow, 11 April to 13 May, travel from Tallinn to Helsinki by ferry for passengers will be temporarily impossible. Freight and transit trips via Finland to Estonia will continue.

The Finnish government has decided to extend the measures to halt the virus until 13 May. Ferry companies were advised to stop ticket sales for regular passengers from Tallinn to Helsinki during this period, and Tallink, Viking Line and Eckerö Line have suspended ticket sales on their websites in this direction.

There are no changes to the right of entry into Finland – meaning that only Estonian citizens officially registered as residents in Finland, as well as providers of essential services, will be able to enter Finland. However, it is worth noting that from Saturday (11 April) travel opportunities between Estonia and Finland will be very limited. The only option is to fly, and Finnair has confirmed that it will fly between Tallinn and Helsinki according to demand.

All transit passengers who want to return to Estonia from more distant countries via Finland can do so even after Friday. For example, Tallink has confirmed that foot and car passengers can embark in Helsinki bound for Tallinn. Please have proof that your final destination is Estonia – for example, a ferry ticket – when boarding a plane in your host country.

Those travelling the Helsinki-Tallinn-Helsinki route for the purpose of unavoidable work and freight transport must prove their right to travel at the border. In addition to their passport or ID card, these passengers must carry an appropriate document, such as an employment contract, to prove the purpose of the trip. The final decision on admission will be made by the Finnish Border Guard.
