Today, on 14 September in Hanoi, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser met with Prime Minister of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, and Minister for Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung. The meetings focused on bilateral relations, mainly education cooperation, trade and tourism. The foreign ministers also discussed the situation in the region and the agreement on the readmission of persons.

“One of the main areas of cooperation between Estonia and Vietnam is education and science projects, which includes agreements between the Estonian universities of Tartu and Tallinn and several universities in Vietnam,” Foreign Minister Mikser said. He noted that as the study programmes are successful and wide-ranging, interest in the projects and studies is growing.

“Vietnam has also become a popular tourist destination for Estonians, so one of our goals is for Estonian citizens to be granted a visa exemption for a period of 90 days,” Mikser added.

The foreign ministers also touched upon the arrangement on the readmission of persons. Foreign Minister Mikser expressed hope that the two countries would sign a cooperation agreement. The meeting with Minister for Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung focused on next steps regarding the development of e-governance and e-services in Vietnam.

Yesterday evening, Foreign Minister Mikser spoke at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam about international relations and EU security.

Foreign Minister Mikser also introduced the priorities of Estonia’s campaign for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council.
