Foreign Minister Mikser to Bolton: we share common understanding of today´s security threats

17. May 2018 - 7:36

Yesterday, on 16 May, Foreign Minister Sven Mikser and his Baltic counterparts met with the National Security Adviser of the United States, John Bolton. The meeting focused on the upcoming NATO Summit and the security situation in Europe, including Baltic region.

“The message of unity and strong transatlantic bond will be the key to a successful NATO Summit in July,” Mikser said. Mikser emphasised Estonia’s desire to promote NATO collective defence and strengthen its deterrence posture. “We also consider fair burden-sharing important and hope that all NATO countries will reach the goal of spending 2 % of their annual GDP on defence as soon as possible,” Mikser noted.

Speaking about regional security, the Baltic foreign ministers stressed the importance of permanent presence of the US in the region. “The Baltic countries and the US have a common understanding on today’s security situation and our alliance is strong. I am confident that it will remain so. To follow up the US-Baltic Summit we are proceeding with negotiations in order to stand up to present security threats collectively,” Mikser emphasised.

The foreign ministers and Bolton also discussed relations with Russia. “We must remain united in our policy towards Russia, and that includes the sanctions policy. That is the only way to deter threats from Russia,” Mikser said.

The Iran nuclear deal was also discussed during the meeting. “The most important is to make sure not to lose sight of the main goal - an Iran free of nuclear weapons. This is our common transatlantic goal,” Mikser said.

Today, on 17 May, the Foreign Minister will be in New York for the UN Security Council open debate on the role of international law in maintaining international peace and security chaired by President of Poland Andrzej Duda.
